2-1-1 is an easy to remember, toll-free telephone number that connects people with important community services and volunteer opportunities.

There are thousands of non-profit organizations and government agencies in New Jersey. People looking for assistance often have trouble navigating this complicated web of health and human service programs and often do not know where to begin. In response to this need, the United Way worked in partnership with the Alliance of Information and Referral Systems to support the nationwide rollout of 2-1-1.

 
  Call centers operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year throughout the entire state of New Jersey and are completely confidential.  
 

Call centers are staffed by information referral specialists with an extensive database at their fingertips that includes both government agencies and private community-based service providers. After assessing a caller's need, specialists directly transfers him/her to a local agency or organization that can best meet the caller's needs.

Specialist will provide information about and referrals to service providers that offer:

  • Basic Human Needs
  • Physical and Mental Health
  • Employment Support
  • Support for Older Americans and Persons with Disabilities
  • Support for Children, Youth and Families
  • Volunteer Opportunities and Donations
