Family Power®

The Family Power Initiative aims to connect families and children to needed services and economic opportunities that promote family stability and self sufficiency.

Many are impoverished and face crises for which they have limited or no financial resources to draw upon. These economic woes are sometimes compounded by substance abuse and mental health issues. Children and youth in these families usually fare poorly among a number of indices of well-being, and are highly at-risk for abuse/neglect, low academic achievement, and involvement with the criminal justice system.

United Way is partnering with community agencies to ensure that vulnerable families and children confronting challenges that compromise their ability to lead stable, healthy and productive lives will have:

  • assistance, motivation and education to modify addictive behavior
  • mental health services to build and support self-sufficiency skills
  • immediate emergency family assistance to reduce dysfunction and dependence
  • support, information and strategies for dealing with domestic violence
  • reduction of barriers to employment for people with disabilities
  • support services to those recovering from drug and alcohol addiction
  • improvement of literacy and English speaking skills
  • pro bono legal representation or direct, personal assistance for those proceeding pro se in family court matters
