Many of Essex County's children raised in single parent households are highly at risk of a number of negative developmental outcomes, including low birth weight, infant mortality, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and lead poisoning. The county's infant mortality rate exceeds the state by nearly four percentage points (5.7%).

To help ensure that Essex County children have a strong start in life, United Way works with our agency partners to ensure that:

  • educational workshops are provided to pregnant teen mothers to prevent low birth weight and infant mortality
  • early childhood screenings are provided (dental, developmental, hearing and vision) to identify potential problems
  • parents have access to prenatal care that enhances fetal growth and development
  • parents and children have access to educational programs that enhance literacy and language development
